And then I stumbled upon Kickstarter. (**The rest of this blog may seem like an infomercial, but I promise, I do not work for Kickstarter, have any friends or boyfriends at Kickstarter, etc.)

Kickstarter is perfect for folks who prefer a more passive, less in-your-face approach to raising money for artistic endeavors.  You create a profile, get approved, incentivize people to donate to your project by providing different tiers of donation rewards, and then use your social media prowess to raise funds (tweeting, blogging, emailing, Facebooking are all excellent ways of getting the word out). Though Kickstarter currently seems to be more a site for low-threshold monetary goals (most projects on the site are asking for 10k or less), I think that this is exactly the kind of site that will help fund the future of the independent artist.

If your social media presence isn’t as strong as you would like, Kickstarter recommends creating a video pitch for your project. This helps get more eyeballs to your campaign, and there’s nothing more personal than SEEING and HEARING from the person behind it all. Here’s a great example of a recent video pitch:
