Shopping for a welding machine and wondering which one is best? Here's my advice: Think about how to obtain more than one. Why?

Because not only the welding machine will do well to have different welding machines, each designed for a process and do it well.

Miller, Lincoln, and make multiple Esab welding machines in an attempt to please customers who want a "one size fits welding machine." There are Chinese made machines to add a plasma cutter to the mix.

The problem here is threefold.

All hoses, cables, remote controls, and torches needed for TIG, MIG, and stick are simply unmanageable. When the machine breaks, you're dead in water, whereas if you have separate machines for each, is available at least until you get the machine fixed Multiprocessing machines never fell short in all three processes … something like an old El Camino that was supposed to be both car and truck, and was not really very good at being car or truck.

Instead of trying to buy the machine that does it all, why not buy two or three welding machines used which are not only good value, but also tried and true machines.

Here are some recommendations:

Tig and stick to a Synrowave Miller 250 or 300 Mig, mig welder Millermatic 250 or 200amp

You can find a Syncrowave 250 on Craigslist for less than $ 2,000 and a Millermatic 250 can be had for under $ 750.

Takes a little effort and you may have to drive for several hours, but you will save hundreds if not thousands, of dollars compared to the purchase of new machines or a new multi-welder.
